A sales engineer wants help turning a rough project note into a clear draft. The note contains a customer's unpublished requirements, and the company does not want another routine cloud upload. A browser-based assistant that processes selected text on the device could be useful. It could also become a frustrating button that works only on the developer's laptop.
On-device AI is a product design opportunity when the workflow remains useful with and without the model. European engineering firms, agencies and specialist suppliers can use it to explore document preflight, drafting and classification with a deliberately narrow data path. The business case starts with a repeated editing task and a supported user environment.
What browser-local inference makes possible
Chrome's built-in AI overview describes browser features that bring models to the user's device. The Prompt API documentation explains model availability checks, a separate initial download and platform, hardware and language requirements. It also states that subsequent model use can work without a network connection once the download is complete.
This is a concrete capability, but it is not universal browser support. Your app must test the actual environment and requested language or modality. A product brief should name the employee devices and browsers you intend to support, then provide an alternative path for everyone else.
Local inference also describes only one part of the application. Analytics, error reports, synchronisation and third-party scripts can still transmit data if the developer includes them. A privacy claim must cover the complete app, not just the model call.
Choose a task with an obvious editable result
Document preflight is a good candidate because it can produce suggestions that a person can inspect. For example, a tool might identify unexplained acronyms, highlight missing section headings or propose a clearer version of a selected paragraph. The user remains in control of the document and can accept individual changes.
Keep the first scope narrow. “Review every confidential document” mixes too many formats, languages and judgements. “Help account managers turn selected English project notes into a consistent draft structure” is easier to test. Your company can then assess whether the result saves time without changing meaning.
Some checks should be ordinary software. Required headings, empty fields, character limits and forbidden placeholders do not need a language model. Run those checks deterministically and reserve AI for suggestions that benefit from language understanding. The interface can present both kinds of feedback while explaining their different confidence.
Make the data boundary visible and real
Give users a clear choice of what the assistant reads: the selected paragraph, the current section or the entire supported document. Do not silently attach other open files or browser content. If the product has a cloud option, label it separately and let the authorised user choose it under the organisation's policy.
Define what is stored locally and when it is cleared. Temporary prompts, draft outputs and saved documents have different purposes. A shared workstation may need a different session policy from a managed individual laptop. Test sign-out, tab closure and browser restart against the agreed behaviour.
Ask the implementation team to inspect outgoing requests during a representative session. The result should demonstrate where document text can travel, including failures and diagnostic paths. A reassuring label in the user interface is weaker evidence than an observed, documented data flow.
The unavailable-model experience is part of the product
Some users will lack the required hardware, storage or browser support. Others will open the app while the model is downloading. A business application should explain the situation, preserve the user's work and keep the basic editor available. It should not force an unexpected upload because the preferred processing route failed.
Distinguish unavailable, downloading, ready and busy states. Let a user cancel a long operation. If a document exceeds the chosen model's capacity, ask the user to select a smaller section or use an agreed alternative. Silently omitting early text can produce a convincing answer based on only part of the document.
Budget for performance on ordinary machines. Test long paragraphs, multiple tabs, battery use and interrupted downloads. A fast result on a powerful test machine does not establish whether the assistant is comfortable during a working day on the organisation's standard devices.
Accuracy has to mean something specific
Create a small set of examples with known expectations. Include technical names the assistant must preserve, numbers that must not change, deliberately incomplete notes and statements that should remain uncertain. Ask reviewers whether the suggestion improves readability without adding promises or removing important qualifications.
For document preflight, separate a missed issue from an incorrect change. Missing an unclear sentence may be tolerable in an advisory feature; changing a quantity or delivery condition may be unacceptable. Your acceptance criteria should reflect those different consequences.
Test each supported language separately. A working English example does not prove German or French terminology quality. If a language is unsupported by the selected browser capability, show that limitation before the user spends time preparing the request.
Buy a maintainable app around the capability
The delivery should include the editor experience, model availability handling, a manual workflow and clear configuration. Ask how the team will detect behaviour changes when a browser or bundled model updates. Keep a set of representative documents that can be checked again after meaningful changes.
Measure time to an accepted draft, the proportion of suggestions retained and the frequency of unsupported devices. These results tell you whether to expand the feature, change the target audience or choose a different processing architecture. The goal is useful employee work, not the largest number of AI requests.
Our guides to enterprise language-model selection and European data residency choices explain related architectural decisions. Local inference may reduce one data transfer, while storage, collaboration and support still require their own design.
TuniCyberLabs develops custom web applications and AI integrations. Scope a browser-local document assistant with a real editing task, representative documents and your device policy. Those inputs are more useful than a broad request to put private AI everywhere.
